Review: Dusk with a Dangerous Duke [Lords of Vice, book 6]

Author:  Alexandra Hawkins
Rating:   ★★★

What happened? I have been waiting for Alexandra Hawkins' next book in the Lords of Vice series, Dusk with a Dangerous Duke, for months, and now that it's here I feel a tad let down. When I finished the book, I was like... "Huh?"

They were children when the Duke of Huntsley was introduced to Lady Grace Kearly. The young duke—nicknamed “Hunter”—took one look at his future bride and thought only of escaping his responsibilities to his family. Marriage was for grown-ups and Hunter still had years of skirt-chasing ahead of him. But now the time has come for Hunter to heed the call: if this Lord of Vice hopes to keep all of his inheritance, he’ll have to claim his long-neglected betrothed…

With her twenty-first birthday approaching, Lady Grace dreads the thought of marrying the duke she has met only once—especially since he’s grown into a notorious rake who will probably beget his heir and abandon her in the country while he pursues fresh game in London. So when Lady Grace coolly decides to call the wedding off, even Hunter is surprised by his refusal to let her go. Suddenly, the notion of claiming and taming this green-eyed beauty is one challenge he cannot resist…

Review: Evil Water

Title:     Evil Water
Author:  Inger Wolf
Rating:   ★★★★ 1/2

*Copy given by publisher for an honest review.

As I previously mentioned, some books can greatly affect me more than the others, that's why I tend to be quite picky about the books I read. I hesitated to read Evil Water because it sounds too thrilling for my taste, but I decided to ask the publisher for one chapter just to get the feel of it.

After one chapter, I had the whole book sent over. That one chapter of Evil Water just lured me in, making me want to read the whole book and find out the evil mastermind behind the dastardly deeds.

Inger Wolf is actually a Danish crime writer, and her book Evil Water (original title: Ondt Vand) was just recently translated to English and published last December 2012 as an e-book. I think it's great that writers are having their books translated to English because we people, who are more comfortable or don't know other languages, are able to read them books!

Two women disappear without a trace, and the same autumn a farmer on the outskirts of Ã…rhus finds them murdered in suitcases under a heap of stone. The skin of one woman is filled with the letter Y and the other has a rare flower in her hair. Inspector Daniel Trokic is leading the case which goes in several directions: to a tribal population in Africa, religious insanity and a horrifying meeting with leeches. When a third woman disappears, Trokic is under pressure to find out what the killer wants to say with his macabre scenery and rituals.

Feature & Follow #12

Welcome to My Book Musings! Feature & Follow is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison Can Read. It’s purpose is to gain and meet new friends and followers. Feautre & Follow has a new button, and it looks fantastic! I have a new header and button too, what do you think about it? :)

You can follow me via e-mail, Goodreads, Google Friend Connect (GFC), Linky, Bloglovin' and RSS. Do add me on your Flipboard account as well!

Q: We always talk about books that WE want. Let's turn it on its head. What books have you given other people lately?

I think the Beautiful Creatures series by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia.

I have set up a Box account for my ebooks so they won't fill up my hard drive, and in case my hard drive crashes at least I'll still have a copy of them! My two elder sisters have access to it so they just download a copy of whatever book they want. I think my eldest sister has just finished reading the Beautiful Creatures series :)

As for physical books, I think the last one I gave was The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, which I gave to my mom. I'm glad she enjoyed it! :)

How about you?

Do check out my own meme, That One Line.

Happy musings! :)

Books that made an impact

Have you ever stopped and thought about the impact a certain book, or several books, has had on your life, either as a blogger, a bookworm, or just a regular book reader?

I have. Especially because I have seen how reading has affected my choices and habits throughout the years. Books have inspired me to read other books, to read more, to explore a different genre, to expand my knowledge, teased me with new tidbits, and one book in particular has steered me from a particular choice.

The first book that I consider the starting point of my bookworm path is Francine Pascal's The Easter Bunny Battle from the Sweet Valley Kids series. This book sparked my lifelong (so far) love for the Sweet Valley series and inspired me to persuade my parents to spend thousands to buy me books. And I’m still buying them.

From the Sweet Valley Kids series, I moved on to twins, then high school, then university, until the Elizabeth series. But somewhere among those high school books, Elizabeth mentioned her love for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and that brief mention sparked my interest to read Pride and Prejudice. Do you see how huge of an impact that was? Just one brief mention and already, I was on the quest to reading a classic book I have never heard of when I was about 12 years old. And in the Unicorns series, Lila Fowler mentions reading The Great Gatsby, and again, I was inspired to read the book. Just like that. Although with The Great Gatsby I think I have to reread the book because I only appreciated it at the end, and I think it’s one of those books that you have to relish from start to finish because there’s something hidden in every chapter that will bring about that glorious, tremendous emotional impact at the end.

Pride and Prejudice not only inspired me to read other Jane Austen books, but also sparked my interest in reading the classics. From my small, limited world of just reading Sweet Valley books (and Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys), I moved on to the fascinating, mind-numbing world of classics. What I particularly liked about Pride and Prejudice is that it was so easy for me to read. I was only 12 at that time, but I finished the book quickly. It also introduced me to the world of regency, to the world of balls, and English aristocracy. It also inspired my first-ever book crush: Mr. Darcy. My copy is getting quite a bit tattered because I keep reading it every year. And I’m still fascinated every. single. time.

My blog graphics from My Drawing Room ♥

After over two years of blogging, My Book Musings finally has a graphic header and button! And they are so adorable. This is a day of rejoicing for me, whoopee! I once went to a launch and they asked if I had a blog image and I couldn't provide them with anything, but now I do. I feel like a more serious blogger now :)) Does it really feel this way?

I asked my fellow Filipina blogger Mayan, the proprietress of My Drawing Room, if she could do graphics for me, and she did, with the only condition that I'm willing to wait. Of course I was! I waited two years for this, I could wait some more. Frankly, I was blown away because when I gave her details on what I wanted, I just said "uhm...a shadow of a girl sitting sideways reading". Honestly, I'm not very creative so I just left it all up to her. She did tell me she's going to put facial features, and I said okay.

The graphics are so beautiful and so right for My Book Musings! She gave me four choices for the banner and I had a really hard time picking which one I'd put up (my sister suggested I make a flash image so I could use all banners!) but I finally decided on the one that's right up there. Aaah I'm so in love with this right now! ♥

Just so you can understand how hard choosing was for me, here are the other options:

Choice 1:

Choice 2:

Choice 3:

Can you see how hard the choices was for me? Maybe I will switch up my graphic header every once in a while! The button was a no brainer; it was just perfect.

The very creative and very nice Miss Mayan has been doodling since forever, until she finally started wondering how to turn her passion into something more.

My Drawing Room is actually a store of really cute bags/pouches and other interesting items such as inspirational posters. She first started as a blogger, but her designs are just so cute, I'm so thankful she put up a store! I have bought several pouches from her since then, but this is the first time I asked for blog graphics. It was a new project for her but I'm so glad she agreed!

The first time I bought from her was a pouch for my man. Yes, I bought a cutesy pouch for my boyfriend but it was so not girly at all! In fact, he never stopped using his since I gave this to him:

I think the pouch just suited my man because he's really into music, and it's blue so he won't feel like he's using a girly pouch. Looking for other gifts for the man in your life? Why not give him these...

Tablet pouch - great for your iPad/tablet-carrying man in your life
A slingbag for your man's little must-haves.

A lunchbox for your little boy (there are also designs for your little girl)!

Me, myself, I have bought (or have been gifted) the ff products:
I use this to carry my iPod, cable, and earphones.

The boyfriend gave me this tote bag for my shoes and slippers when I'm travelling.
This backpack has been with me to Singapore, Davao, and other places!

I've been saving this tidbit for last: she customizes. This is perfect because if someone grabs your bag, you're sure to have proof that it's yours because it has your name already. She can personalize them according to your taste, or just add your name if you already found a logo you're in love with. For example, I'm actually the one who chose the words on the backpack. Some choose their name, I chose one of my credos: Live. Love. Laugh. Plus, I asked her to include those stars because I love 'em. To think that I just won the backpack because of a contest! Yes, she's that nice and accommodating :)

Right now, I'm eyeing this pretty little pouch and have it changed to my name instead. Or maybe on a different bag that I'm sure I'll find a perfectly reasonable use for. :D

Although I seriously think this Paris-inspired laptop bag design is just screaming for my attention:

That One Line #14

Welcome to the That One Line meme! 'That One Line' is a weekly meme I created, which is about a particular sentence/phrase/paragraph that I found particularly striking. It should be from a book although quotes related to reading are also welcome. It doesn’t have to be a book that I just finished but can be something that I read before and I just want to share it. If you’re doing this meme too, post a comment with a link to your post so we can read it! :)

Today's quote is from a book I reviewed last Tuesday, From This Day Forward. This line was from Carmen Roces, pertaining to love and relationships. It particularly struck a nerve with me, making me ponder about it for some time. I hope it does the same for you.

"Be safe and be brave.
And if you can, please be both at the same time."

Ciao, and happy musings :)

Quickstop Tuesdays Review: From This Day Forward

Quickstop Tuesdays is a recently new feature in My Book Musings where I will post reviews on Tuesdays about comic books/graphic novels or pocketbooks I read that have less than 200 pages.  The book for today has 144 pages, and is by Filipino author Marla Miniano.

Title:      From This Day Forward
Author:   Marla Miniano
Rating:   ★★★★ 1/2

*Copy provided by publisher for an honest review.

There are some books that leave you with a pleasant feeling after finishing the book, and From This Day Forward is one such book. I didn't really know what to expect from the book but I decided to give it a chance. All I know is that it's about two people getting married, but I wasn't sure if they'd actually end up together. Before I go into more details, here is the plot...

When a couple gets married, it isn't just their lives that are thrown into chaos. For Nicholas and Nala's wedding, there's the mother of the bride who is forced to face her failed marriage; there mother of the groom, who revisits her past -- an old love; the bride's best friend who has lost the only boy she thinks she will ever love and with him, all her happiness; the bride's cousin who fooled around with her boyfriend's best friend (who inconveniently turns out to be the groom); and the groom's sister who cannot understand her brother's choice of a future wife.

Surrounding the bride and groom's happiness are the heartache, joys, hopes, dreams and realizations of the people who care about them. It makes you think: does everybody get a chance at happily ever after?

Review: Picture Perfect

Title:      Picture Perfect
Author:   Catherine Clark
Rating:   ★★★★

You know how sometimes, you just need a light book to pass away the time, and to just read something that's not overly dramatic or too serious and make you feel emotionally heavy? Well, Picture Perfect was just what I needed after a long week. It was relaxing, easy to read, with the story just flowing from page to page. I found myself not thinking about any other book, clinging to the easy vibes I was getting from this.

A family vacation with her parents and their friends and at the Outer Banks - it doesn’t exactly scream romance to Emily, but it does sound like fun, hanging out with her long-time friends Heather, Adam and Spencer. Then Emily sees who’s staying at the giant rental house next door to theirs: some very cute guys, and one of them seems to be interested in her. Emily goes out with him, trying to have a fling like her friend Heather insists she should - but will her overprotective long-time buddies Adam and Spencer get in her way?

That One Line #13

Because it's Valentine's Day today, this one will be mushy. And I will give it to you without explanation, but for you to admire, perhaps ponder upon, and maybe you'll share your own musings, yeah?

"And it was only when I began to feel actual, physical pain every time you left the room that it finally dawned on me: I was in love, for the first time in my life.
I knew it was hopeless, but that didn't matter to me.
And it's not that I want to have you.
All I want is to deserve you.
Tell me what to do. Show me how to behave.
I'll do anything you say."
-- Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos

Have you ever felt this way?

Ciao, happy musings :)

Review: One Good Earl Deserves a Lover [The Rules of Scoundrels, book 2]

Author:   Sarah MacLean
Rating:   ★★★★★

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

If you're sitting at home like me, looking for the next book to read, why not pick up a delicious historical romance book to spend Valentine's Day with?

Sarah MacLean, one of my favorite historical romance authors, is back with One Good Earl Deserves a Lover, and it was well worth the wait!

Lady Philippa Marbury is odd. The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than balls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she's never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of The Fallen Angel, London's most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross.

Like any good scientist, Pippa's done her research and Cross's reputation makes him perfect for her scheme. She wants science without emotion—the experience of ruination without the repercussions of ruination. And who better to provide her with the experience than this legendary man? But when this odd, unexpected female propositions Cross, it's more than tempting . . . and it will take everything he has to resist following his instincts—and giving the lady precisely what she wants.

Review: Persistence of Vision [Interchron, book 1] & 8Qs with Liesel K. Hill

Title:     Persistence of Vision [Interchron, book 1]
Author:   Liesel K. Hill
Rating:   ★★★★

*Copy was provided by the author for an honest review.

There are some books that I just cannot finish (i.e. The Shack), and I thought Persistence of Vision would be one of them. In fact, after three chapters I put the book down because I did not enjoy it, but I persisted and started to enjoy the book by the fourth chapter or so. I’m actually feeling a little put out that it ended so abruptly, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the Interchron series. Read on for the review and the interview with the author, Liesel K. Hill :)

In a world where collective hives are enslaving the population and individuals have been hunted to the verge of extinction, Maggie Harper, and independent 21st Century woman, must find the strength to preserve the freedom of the future, but without the aid of her memories.

After experiencing a traumatic time loss, Maggie is plagued by a barrage of images she can't explain. When she's attacked by a creep with a spider's web tattoo, she is saved by Marcus, a man she's never met, but somehow remembers. He tells her that both he and her creepy attacker are from a future in which individuals are being murdered by collectives, and Marcus is part of the rebellion. The collectives have acquired time travel and they plan to enslave the human race throughout all of history. The flashes Maggie has been seeing are echoes of lost memories, and the information buried deep within them is instrumental in defeating the collective hives.

In order to preserve the individuality of mankind, Maggie must try to re-discover stolen memories, re-kindle friendships she has no recollection of, and wade through her feelings for the mysterious Marcus, all while dodging the tattooed assassins the collectives keep sending her way.

If Maggie can't fill the holes in her memory and find the answers to stop the collectives, the world both in her time and in all ages past and future will be doomed to enslavement in the grey, mediocre collectives. As the danger swirls around her and the collectives close in, Maggie realizes she must make a choice: stand out or fade away......

Quickstop Tuesdays Review: Anak Bathala: Kalem [Anak Bathala, book 1]

Quickstop Tuesdays is a new feature in My Book Musings where I will post reviews on Tuesdays about comic books/graphic novels or pocketbooks I read that have less than 200 pages. The first book to be featured for Quickstop Tuesdays is the graphic novel Anak Bathala: Kalem, which was created by three Filipino friends, Norman G. de los Santos, Bernard H. Morillo, and Edsel L. Africa, who are all originally from Mindoro.

Title:        Anak Bathala: Kalem [Anak Bathala, book 1]
Creators:  Norman G. de los Santos | Bernard H. Morillo | Edsel L. Africa
Rating:     ★★★★

*Copy provided by launch event organizer for an honest review.

Anak Bathala: Kalem is the first book in a five-book graphic novel series, revolving around mythology of the old times. The first book is about Kalem's search for why he is called "Anak Bathala" (demi-god). The language in the book has a mixture of English and Filipino terms, with Baybayin and Surat Mangyan scripts written in some parts of the book.

A brief overview of the whole series from their Facebook page:

Anak Bathala is the epic adventure of Kalem that showcases rich Filipino mythology and culture. It exhibits native Filipino beliefs and folk work intertwined with values. The other books included in the series collection are: Yamal, Arau, Yesha and Anak Bathala. Each character embodies intrinsic Filipino traits like admirable virtues of courage, determination, self-discipline, prudence, camaraderie and leadership. Their stories also uncover the deceiving sphere of glorious power. The elven persona of Yesha exudes the remarkable attributes of womanhood that represents Filipino women. Anak Bathala pays homage to the golden age of comic makers with its ground of artistic and detailed illustrations.

The final book of Anak Bathala juxtaposes the revolving characters of books 1-4 and how they will join together to overcome the evil transgression of Haring Nannum and Bathala Karimlan in the Land of Mystical Mindoro.

Review: In a Witch's Wardrobe [A Witchcraft Mystery, book 4]

Title:      In a Witch's Wardrobe [A Witchcraft Mystery, book 4]
Author:  Juliet Blackwell
Rating:  ★★★★

Well this is interesting.

I thought I had In a Witch's Wardrobe pegged, at least in terms of love life but boy, was I wrong. I should have picked up on that but I was just so grateful that that's not coming true. Then this happened. What happened? I suggest you read the book. It was...interesting.

Lily Ivory is living her dream of owning a vintage clothing store—and practicing magic on the side. But when she encounters a sinister sleeping spell, Lily comes face-to-face with a nightmarish evil...

Taking a night off from running her successful San Francisco clothing store, Lily attends a local art deco ball where vintage fashions steal the show. But when a young woman at the event falls under a mysterious sleeping sickness, Lily senses that a curse was placed on the woman's corsage.

Before Lily can solve the woman's magical ailment, she's asked to assist in investigating a string of poisonings in the Bay Area Witchcraft community. She's gained the trust of the local covens by supporting women's charities through her clothing store. But soon, Lily suspects that one of her new acquaintances might not be so well intentioned and could be dabbling in dark magic and deadly botany...

Feature & Follow #10

Welcome to My Book Musings! Feature & Follow is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison Can Read. It’s purpose is to gain and meet new friends and followers. I'm so glad I found this meme!

You can follow me via e-mail, Goodreads, Google Friend Connect (GFC), Linky, Bloglovin' and RSS. Do add me on your Flipboard account as well!

This week's question is:

Q: Happy Mardi Gras! If they were throwing the HOTTEST books off of a Mardi Gras float -- what would you do to have them throw to you…?

Happy Mardi Gras!

If I interpret "hottest" as the newest and most in demand books around, I would like them to throw me the Harry Potter hardbound set signed by J.K. Rowling and the cast! With my acceptance letter to Hogwarts ;)

If we're going for hottest, meaning "sizzling" stories, I'd love the Lords of Vice series by Alexandra Hawkins. I already read them on my Nook but I'd love to have paperback copies, signed of course. Or Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series. They weren't exactly the sexiest, but they really made me laugh and gave me good vibes the whole time I was reading them.

And...I would uhhh dance wildly like no one's watching until I catch the attention of the book givers while wearing my beloved black Hogwarts hoodie with the Hogwarts logo to stand out from all the revelers.

Or dance like a sprite or fairy. I've never dressed up like one!

But I'd ask them not to throw it at me during the revelry, that's going to be quite painful!

What about you, what's your pick? :)

Check out my own meme, That One Line! :)

Review: Hexes and Hemlines [A Witchcraft Mystery, book 3]

Title:      Hexes and Hemlines [A Witchcraft Mystery, book 3]
Author:  Juliet Blackwell
Rating:  ★★★★ 1/2

Lily Ivory sure is growing on me.

In the third book in Juliet Blackwell's A Witchcraft Mystery series, we see the plot take a darker turn. While the series is somber, it is a mystery book after all, I felt like the plot was more serious this time. This focused more on the murder, witchcraft, and hexes. Moreover, while it did touch Lily's love life, or the lack of it, this was not a major issue as much as it was in the previous two books, Secondhand Spirits and A Cast-Off Coven.

With her vintage clothing store taking off, Lily Ivory is finding that life in San Francisco suits her just fine. But her ability to sense vibrations from the past, so useful in locating secondhand gems, has landed her in the middle of a new mystery...

Lily gets called away from Aunt Cora's Closet when the police need a witch's take on a strange case. Malachi Zazi was stabbed to death in his apartment, under a ladder, surrounded by the number thirteen, a broken mirror, and a black cat—superstitions that the victim, as head of a rationalist society, was devoted to discrediting.

When the police identify a suspect from the Serpentarian Society, Lily is shocked to learn it's someone she knows. But with bad luck plaguing all its members, she begins to wonder if there's more at work than mere coincidence. And while there aren't many clues from the crime scene, Lily finds evidence of dark witchcraft and a hex on her friend's doorstep. With her friend's safety at stake, Lily is determined to use magic to find the murderer before everyone's luck runs out...

That One Line #12

Welcome to the That One Line meme! 'That One Line' is a weekly meme I created, which is about a particular sentence/phrase/paragraph that I found particularly striking. It should be from a book although quotes related to reading are also welcome. It doesn’t have to be a book that I just finished but can be something that I read before and I just want to share it. If you’re doing this meme too, post a comment with a link to your post so we can read it! :)

I have not read any good quotes in the books I’ve read lately so I looked at one of my ever-favorite books, Pride and Prejudice. And also because I’m still on a high from this week’s Feature & Follow question!

My chosen quote for this week is one that I suspect has caused many-a-sighs when we read it.

Busy bee updates

15982000This February sure is a busy month! Aside from work, spending time with family and friends, making sure I spend time to pick out a lovely gift for my man and to schedule a Valentines dinner with him, I'll be quite busy in my blog this month!

Next week will be my review of Persistence of Vision and interview of the author Liesel K. Hill. Be sure to check that out!

I have some more book reviews this months, with copies sent by the publishers. I also have to make sure to keep up with my Goodreads 2013 book challenge. I'm a couple of books behind already! Plus, I have the 2013 Witches and Witchcraft Reading Challenge that I am enjoying so far.

How about you, fellow book bloggers? How’s your 2013 so far? Smile

Sophie Kinsella's Wedding Night soon to be released in the Philippines

Good news again, Filipino readers! Just found out via National Bookstore's Facebook page that Sophie Kinsella's next book, Wedding Night, will soon be available in National Bookstore.

Wedding Night's synopsis from Sophie Kinsella's Facebook page:
"Lottie is tired of long-term boyfriends who don’t want to commit to marriage. When her old boyfriend Ben reappears and reminds her of their pact to get married if they were both still single at thirty, she jumps at the chance. There will be no dates and no engagement—just a straight wedding march to the altar! Next comes the honeymoon on the Greek island where they first met.

But not everyone is thrilled with Lottie and Ben’s rushed marriage, and family and friends are determined to intervene. Will Lottie and Ben have a wedding night to remember or one to forget?"

I'm a big fan of Sophie Kinsella, since the Shopaholic series. Since then, she just keeps writing all these incredibly funny chick lit books that I can't seem to put down. But my favorites so far, in no particular order, are Remember Me,  The Undomestic Goddess, and Twenties Girl.

How about you, are you as excited as I am? :)

Feature & Follow #09

Welcome to My Book Musings! Feature & Follow is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison Can Read. It’s purpose is to gain and meet new friends and followers. I'm so glad I found this meme!

You can follow me via e-mail, Goodreads, Google Friend Connect (GFC), Linky, Bloglovin' and RSS. Do add me on your Flipboard account as well!

Q: What is the first thing you would do if you woke up to find yourself in your favorite book?

When I read the question for this week, I actually laughed and let my imagination run amok. I had to choose among my favorite books, which is always not an easy task! But here it is...

If I woke up in the world of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, oh my gosh, I am so going to go to Mr. Darcy and try my darnedest best to snag him. I'll make sure that I have "fine eyes" and I will walk all the way there for the nicest-looking rosy cheeks ;) I'm sure Pride and Prejudice aficionados know what I mean!

If I wake up in the world of Harry Potter, of course I'm already assuming that I'm a wizard, I am so going to befriend Hermione first. She's pretty awesome and she could help me with my homework because I wouldn't know anything! Plus I want to be included in their little trio and go visiting with Hagrid and riding on hippogriffs...you catch my drift.

I love Trese, but I sure hope I wouldn't wake up in that world!

How about you?

Check out my own meme That One Line! :)
